Golden Eagles

Welcome to Golden Eagles with Mr Protherough

We are so pleased to welcome you to Golden Eagles for the academic year 2025-2026.

Summer 1 update

Golden Eagles – A Term to Celebrate!

What a fantastic and memorable term it has been for our Year 6 pupils! As we approach the final stretch of the academic year, we are incredibly proud to reflect on the hard work, resilience, and sense of community that has defined this term.

SATs Success and Community Support

A huge congratulations to all our Year 6 children for completing their SATs with such determination and maturity. They approached each test with courage and focus, truly demonstrating how far they have come during their primary school journey.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire school community for their support—especially our wonderful Year 5 pupils, who showed kindness, encouragement, and understanding throughout SATs week. Their thoughtful gestures and positivity made a real difference, and it was a lovely example of teamwork and care within our school.

Curriculum Highlights

History – The End of the Anglo-Saxon Era

In History, children have been engrossed in learning about the dramatic end of the Anglo-Saxon period. They explored key events such as:

· The Battle of Stamford Bridge

· The Battle of Hastings

· The Norman Conquest

Pupils developed a strong understanding of how these significant battles shaped England’s future, analysing causes and consequences with impressive depth and enthusiasm.

We also explored our first Creative Outcome assessment for topic – where the children wrote, filmed, edited and produced their own podcasts about an area of Anglo-Saxon Britain that interested them.

English – Biography Writing, exploring literature and publishing

In English, our focus has been on writing biographies, inspired by the life and work of Philip Pullman, a celebrated author closely associated with Oxford.

The children explored his background, his achievements, and his storytelling legacy. As part of this work, they examined Lyra’s Oxford, a companion book set in the rich and imaginative world of His Dark Materials. This has sparked excitement for our upcoming topic next term: Amazing Oxford

We are delighted to announce that this unit will begin with a trip to Oxford Castle early next term. This will give children a fantastic opportunity to connect their learning to real-life history and geography in our local area.

Sporting Achievements

It has also been an exciting term for sport!

Our girls’ football team have reached the final, where they will face Eynsham—a fantastic achievement and a testament to their hard work and teamwork.

Our boys’ football team have also had a brilliant run and will face Eynsham in the semi-final.

We are incredibly proud of all the players for their commitment, sportsmanship, and determination. Good luck to both teams—we are cheering you on!

RSE (Relationships and Health Education)

This term, pupils have taken part in important discussions and learning around:

· Being healthy

· Building and maintaining positive relationships

· Understanding their role within a community

· Staying safe online

The maturity and thoughtfulness shown during these sessions has been excellent, helping to prepare them for life beyond primary school.

Looking Ahead – Final Term Focus

As we move into our final term, we are excited to dive into a curriculum rich in discovery and exploration:

· Science: A major focus on Animals including Humans and Evolution, encouraging curiosity about how living things grow, adapt, and survive.

· Local Geography and History: A deeper look at Oxford—its past, its people, and its landscape—bringing learning right to our doorstep.

Final Thoughts

This term has been a wonderful reminder of just how capable, thoughtful, and resilient our Year 6 pupils are. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved and look forward to an exciting and enriching final term together. Let’s start thinking about the leavers service and end of year production… Well done, Golden Eagles—you’ve been amazing!

What an amazing start to the year we have had! The Golden Eagles have taken off and are soaring into their role at the top of the school. There have been many personal developments already. By taking part in events, such as the cross country - showing true determination and resilience - as well as the year sixes taking on the roles of line supervisors, lunchtime helpers and assembly assistants, we have gelled as a class and found our supportive and responsible natures. The value this term was 'friendship', and to see our class settle and guide each other into their new position of responsibility in the school has been wonderful. In terms of learning, the children have flourished with the newfound freedom of more independent learning activities and high expectations. As a teacher, it always makes me proud and joyous when the children enter school and ask if they can continue their research, learning or a presentation with enthusiasm. We have explored the wonders of the solar system in science, and beyond that, the mysteries of the planet-moon Pandora for our English non-chronological reports. We took those report writing skills and then used them to study and record the wonders of African geography and culture in topic. There have been many highlights, and many more to come. Well done, Golden Eagles, and thank you for the support...

IMPS Visit

Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic visit from a health and safety expert from the Injury Minimization Programme for Schools (I.M.P.S.). Pupils learned key skills in first aid, staying safe, and the role of EMTs. Through hands-on activities, they practised how to respond in emergencies, including calling for help and using the recovery position. It was an engaging and informative session—thank you to I.M.P.S. for such a valuable experience!
